About Bambu
MISSION
“To provide high performance support to committed individuals curious to uncover their potential. To empower and inspire, and to enrich all aspects of life along the journey”
Philosophy
‣ To deliver and design training and coaching environments that are rich in learning opportunities to give each athlete ownership.
‣ To build training systems from solid foundations, never being afraid of the ‘basics’, harnessing health, strength, resilience and enjoyment, as key pillars to longevity and performance.
‣ To be relentless in our quest to critique and explore the developments in sport science and training methodologies so we stay abreast of science and our delivery service to the athlete.
‣ To act as ‘more than a coach’ and develop a relationship that brings growth and learning to both parties along the journey, built on trust and communication.
The Journey So far
I have always been involved in sport and have been coaching / teaching since I was 16. I spent many an hour [ and so did my parents] up and down the pool as a National Age group swimmer. It wasnt quite to be but I took my experience of the sport into teaching swimming and coaching throughout my late academic days and throughout university.
I studied Sport & Exercise Science and during my Masters took up a role with Leeds United FC as their u18 Fitness coach. This was the start of my career as a Performance Coach and later assumed the Head role at Leeds United before departing to Hong Kong to lead Sport Science Development at the Football Association of Hong Kong , China.
Head of Physical Performance : Leeds United FC [8yrs]
Sport Science Manager : The Football Association of Hong Kong, China [9yrs]
During this time in football, I began uncovering a passion of my own. Triathlon. I remember a good friend reaching out in 2012 . He said do you want to do an Ironman next year? [We had both never even done a triathlon], so off we went, Lanzarote 2013 and finishing with the famous quote “never again”, only to find myself at the Ironman World Championships in Kona in 2018. I fell in love with the sport and the people within it.
When I moved to Hong Kong there was a fantastic endurance based community and given that my day job was delivering science backed training to enhance performance, I began coaching a few friends who reached out. I certainly don’t know it all, and sadly I am not a world class athlete, but I love coaching. This small group gradually built in numbers along with it my joy of seeing good people, achieve great things. To know what efforts they go to, nobody is paying them to do this, they do so for the the love for it, for that relenting desire and curiosity of just how far they can go, and I love playing a small role in facilitating that.
by 2024 I had spent almost 8 years supporting others online, and after a personal event in my life I stood back and reflected on my own passions and where my greatest happiness was coming from. I loved my roles in football and still wish to help players and teams but my greatest joy was coming from helping individuals tackle the demands of endurance sport alongside High Performing Jobs and Busy Family lives.
And here we are, the birth of Bambu Endurance. A name that for me embodies many a quality but the key being resilience. I have never seen ANY athlete / person succeed without set backs, without a need to over come, to tolerate, adapt, and grow stronger.
